The Policing Authority today (16 May 2017) welcomes the announcement by the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality, Ms Frances Fitzgerald TD, of the membership and final terms of reference of the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland.
The Policing Authority welcomes the announcement by GSOC of its investigation, in the public interest, into the circumstances leading up to and including the death of Garda Tony Golden, the apparently self-inflicted death of Adrian Crevin-Mackin and the serious wounding of Siobhán Phillips, in October 2015.
In response to a number of press queries, the Authority has issued the following statement: On 27 March 2017 the Policing Authority requested information from the Garda Síochána on a range of matters relating to Fixed Charge Notices and Mandatory Alcohol Testing data to facilitate the Authority’s further consideration of the matter.
The Policing Authority welcomes today’s public acknowledgement by the Garda Síochána that there are major discrepancies in the published data regarding road side breath tests and their admission of possible wrongful prosecutions and convictions arising from a range of road traffic offences.
In one of the most significant reforms in policing, the Policing Authority at its meeting yesterday (23 March 2017) appointed an Assistant Commissioner of the Garda Síochána for the first time.
In June 2016 the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality, formally requested the Policing Authority to submit a report on the policies and procedures in the Garda Síochána to deal with whistle-blowers/whistleblowing, and to make recommendations.
