The Policing Authority today (16 May 2017) welcomes the announcement by the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality, Ms Frances Fitzgerald TD, of the membership and final terms of reference of the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland. The Authority acknowledges the extensive knowledge and experience of the Commission members in their respective fields and looks forward to cooperating with them as they progress this important work.
The Authority has perspectives and analysis which it looks forward to sharing with the Commission in due course. In the meantime, it is essential that the existing plans for Garda Síochána reform continue to be implemented, and will be driven by the Authority’s ongoing oversight.
Speaking after the announcement, the Policing Authority chairperson Josephine Feehily said
“The work of the Commission on the future of Policing is important and timely, and will no doubt contribute significantly to the development of policing in Ireland and the enhancement of the oversight framework for the benefit of the community as a whole. I particularly welcome the comprehensive nature of the terms of reference. While the Commission is carrying out its important work, the Authority will continue to press for change through focussed oversight and challenge of Garda performance.”
