The Policing Authority is pleased to announce that it has appointed Detective Chief Superintendent Patrick Clavin to the rank of Assistant Commissioner in the Garda Síochána on an acting basis.

This appointment is made to fill the temporary vacancy in the rank arising from an appointment to acting Deputy Commissioner. The appointment was made following a selection competition that involved a three-staged process, conducted in accordance with the statutory framework and the Authority’s Statement of Practice, arising from which Detective Chief Superintendent Clavin was placed on the panel for appointment to the rank of Assistant Commissioner.

The Authority congratulates Acting Assistant Commissioner Clavin and wishes him well in his future career.

Biography of Detective Chief Superintendent Pat Clavin

Pat Clavin is from Oldcastle, Co Meath. He has 38 years policing experience in  a variety of roles including mainstream policing, in the Garda National Immigration Bureau as a Detective Inspector, as Superintendent in Cahir, Co Tipperary and in Lucan and Blanchardstown Districts in Dublin. As a Chief Superintendent he served in Professional Standards and Internal Affairs in Headquarters, as Divisional Officer in DMR West. Since August 2016 Pat has been appointed as the Chief Bureau Officer of the Criminal Assets Bureau.

Pat has a Bachelor of Arts in Public Management Degree (Administration of Justice Stream), a Masters in Science (Economics) in Policy Studies, a Post Graduate Diploma in Police Leadership, an Advanced Diploma in Corporate, Regulatory and White Collar Crime. He underwent the Leaders for Tomorrow Programme in Harvard University and has completed a number of professional policing courses in Ireland and abroad. In 2019 he completed the Strategic Command Course in the College of Policing in the UK.
